Knock out BTL

Agency: PENCIL Advertising, Kuwait

Chief Creative Director: Gilbert S. Semillano

“Published” refers to ATL (Above-The-Line) media such as magazines and newspapers. A product “catalogue” is neither a magazine nor a newspaper – it is a BTL (Below-The-Line) item and this disqualifies the work from being entered into any kind of creativity competition.

Gilbert Semillano admitted on February 13th, 2008 at 10:15 am that the ad was not published in the following statment: “Louai, you’re searching in the wrong direction, this wasn’t released in the newspaper, it was published in SONY’S product catalogue issue November 2007″.

Don’t bite.

Original : Paragon Marketing Communications Less Original: Pencil Advertising

Creative Director: Gilbert Semillano

It is interesting that Gilbert confessed to never publishing this ad (except as a post on a blog).

“It is too much of a coincidence to have the same concept and art-
direction in the same country, same industry in the same time
perioud, except that we created the concept as a calendar (2000
copies) and print ad (published it in the yellow pages).

Plagiarism: The abuse of another’s original work by copying it and passing it off as one’s own. As defined in Alastair Campbell book titled The Designer’s Lexicon. Page: 293 ISBN:0-304-35505-4

A copycat is a person that mimics or repeats the behavior of another. The term is often derogatory, suggesting a lack of originality. The expression may derive from kittens that learned by imitating the behaviors of their mothers. – Wikipedia
