Ad Agencies to Blame for Recession?

bob

By: Bob Gilbreath  24 April 2009

It’s an unfair assessment, but the sooner we admit our problem, the sooner we can drive a solution.

There is no shortage of people to blame for the economic crisis that we find ourselves in today. Rogue traders, greedy i-bankers, poor government, and credit-card companies just to name a few. But yesterday I discovered the latest group in the bull’s-eye of angry public opinion: those of us who work at advertising agencies. It’s yet another shot against a group that is traditionally rated alongside lawyers and used-car salesmen in terms of public respect, and another example of how we need to collectively get our act together.

Harris Poll released on April 15 asked more than 2,000 people, “How much responsibility, if any, should the following groups take for the current economic crisis because they caused people to buy things they couldn’t afford?” As you can see in the chart above, advertising agencies received the highest share of the blame among the group, with 66% of people assigning us at least some responsibility for the country’s troubles.

Spec Work and Crowdsourcing: Gambles that Don’t Pay Off

The economy’s in the toilet and you’re hungry for jobs, so you’re working on spec or posting designs to sites like CrowdSpring. It’s understandable. The problem is, spec and crowdsourcing can lower your value and hourly rates so far that minimum wage looks like a fat paycheck. Here’s what to do instead.

Written by Pamela Pfiffner on April 27, 2009

Finding meaningful work that pays well has always been a challenge for designers. You hustle to attract prospective clients, produce thorough proposals highlighting your suitability for the assignment; pitch possible design solutions; submit a bid for a budget; and hopefully get the job.

If you do, you work to develop a good relationship with the client that includes constant and thoughtful communication about objectives, goals, and branding. Based on feedback, designs evolve over time until the client is satisfied. Then you cash your well-deserved check.

But increasingly, this process is being undermined by two client initiatives, one old and one new: spec work and crowdsourcing.

The dubai lynx effect

one_in_billionp_funzugorg_21

In the pre-internet era copycats used to get away with anything and everything so much that they milked dry the advertising award shows cow.

one_in_billionp_funzugorg_171

Nowadays the copycats are no longer capable of getting away with anything so they run even though they cannot hide. When they get caught and they always do they get their tale bit-off.

First I would like to Thank Peter for attempting humor, Media Week for humoring Peter and FP7 for their alleged generosity.

The advertising industry is a serious business and as such warrants proper regulation if it is to thrive.

I hope that the organizers of the Dubai Lynx investigate all the agencies accused of misconduct and not stop at FP7 Doha, as they were not the only agency guilty of misconduct

Additional facts about the Lynx, plagiarism and copycat in the Arab World

  louai_press_crop

Louai Alasfahani

Managing Director/Chief Creative Officer – Paragon Marketing Communication

Secretary General – IAA Kuwait Chapter

The following is the full set of questions sent in by Arab Ad and the answers that i sent in which were supposed to be published in their May issue but for some reasons where never published.

1- In the advertising world, copycat/plagiarism has been a hot topic with a number of high-profile cases including the recent news of the Lynx awards.
In your opinion, do the negative findings and bad ending of this year’s Lynx Award taint the reputation of the ad industry in the Arab World?

The “findings” you are referring to, are the unlawful entries into the recent Lynx, which are unquestionably negative; however the exposure of such “findings” and the punitive actions taken so far are undeniably positive; so this years’ Lynx should not be seen as a bad ending but rather viewed as a good beginning towards awarding work that reflects the creative reality of the Arab world.

The entire ad industry in the Middle East cannot be liable for the choice of others to win by cheating and the only reputations that got tainted were of the individuals/agencies proved guilty of unlawful practices that demonstrated lack of self-respect, no appreciation of the Lynx organizers/judges and the abandonment of the ad industry.
