On advertising and progress

Advertising has induced progress in the use by manufacturers of new materials, new tools, and new processes of manufacture by calling their attention to economies which could be achieved and to the new uses to which they could be put. Without such advertising, information of this kind would take years to reach all of those who might benefit by it and progress would be delayed – Harry S. Truman

It was a nice evening spent in Abdul Wahab restaurant by the Gulf with my IAA Kuwait Chapter friends and colleges Mr. Adnan Al Rashid, IAA Honorary President, Mr. Michel Barakat, Tresurer and Mr. Fareed Salom, Board Member.

I also met up with lots of my friends in the advertising industry; some of which  i have not seen i a while; including my ex-client Mr. Khalid Al Rashid and ex-partner in Graffiti Mr. Ali Mazeh.

Anubis005

Published in Al Thulatha weekly newspaper in Kuwait. August 25, 2009. Page: 17.

Um Khamas the famous cartoons from the UAE has fallen victim of copyright infringement in Kuwait. some one found it profitable to advertise Um Khamas branded sweets and candies which are very popular during the month of Ramadan and profit from that without paying franchising fees or obtaining approval from the character copyright owners!!! wont be the first time or the last. Happy Gergeyan everyone.

A pigs tale

Posted by Patrick Burgoyne

The copy-cat

German agency DSG has created a nice, if over-long, film to mark the 50th anniversary of the Olympus PEN camera. YouTube commenters, however, have been quick to point out its similarity to an earlier film

The DSG film (above) tells the story of one man’s life in stop motion. As is explained on its YouTube posting “We shot 60.000 pictures, developed 9.600 prints and shot over 1.800 pictures again. No post-production!”

However, it does look remarkably like Takeuchi Taijin’s Wolf and Pig film

The original

Eliza Williams’ piece The YouTube Dilemma from our May issue (which you can read here) discussed the difficulties ad agencies are getting themselves into over YouTube. On the one hand, here is a rich source of ideas to “borrow” and adapt for campaigns; on the other, is the realisation that they cannot get away with simply taking others’ ideas for their own use as they would have done in the past.

And this is where Olympus and DSG seem to have got themselves into a pickle. In response to commenters pointing out the obvious debt the Olympus film owes to Taijin’s piece, the following has been added: “Some of the comments we have read here suggest that we should mention the creator of “A wolf loves pork”, Mr Taijin Takeuchi. While we were looking for a way to realise a story describing “a journey through time” based on printed images, we were inspired by Mr Takeuchi’s brilliant work. For this reason we intentionally quoted his work in our little movie while showing full respect to his original idea. We didn’t mention his name because we did not want to do so without his prior agreement. However after considering some of the comments posted here we have decided to add credits to him and his work, which we obviously absolutely love.”

Hmmm – not really helping themselves are they?

Egyptian Old Fart Tarek Nour steals 14 TV commercials to launch his own TV station

They stole 14 different creations, used them as their own without crediting the originals or even mentioning them and profited from doing so.

The work was done for profit to promote the launching of the TV station owned by the owner of multiple advertising agencies and TV production companies; he goes by the name Tarek Nour who openly admitted to copying 14 promos (so far) and is considered a creative legend in Egypt.

This only goes to show the true status of creativity in the Middle East. copy past. copy anything from anywhere and past it anywhere but most importantly never forget to enter such work in creativity awards as bragging rights are as important as getting a raise, or getting new clients and undeserved respect from people whom you take for granted and deem ignorant!!!

I hope we do not see this work on next year short-list at the Dubai Lynx. The following are some examples of the original content which Egyptian Advertising industry Top Dog Tarek Nour copied  the ideas from and used them as promos to launch his TV station during the month of Ramadan!!! This guy will stop at nothing.

The videos have been removed by Tarek Nour from Youtube trying to cover up his crime, however tow of them are still available on Smells like a dirty copycat / Ça sent bon la mauvaise cope and Thinking about copycat? / Touché coulé!

Talent

The real issue is not talent as an independent element, but talent in relationship to will, desire, and persistence. Talent without these things vanishes and even modest talent with those characteristics grows.Milton Glaser

ANUBIS was a very old god of the ancient Egyptians, universally worshipped throughout the land and became considered the gatekeeper and ruler of the underworld; the “Guardian of the veil“ he was “Lord of the Cleansing Room” and the opener of the roads of the North. “He observed the weighing of the deceased’s heart against the feather of Maat [Truth] and reported his findings to the jury of the gods.
