Royal Opera House Muscat – Logo crime analysis

Clip art, in the graphic arts, refers to pre-made images used to illustrate any medium.

Today, clip art is used extensively in both personal and commercial projects, ranging from home-printed greeting cards to commercial candles.

Clip art comes in many forms, both electronic and printed. However, most clip art today is created, distributed, and used in an electronic form.

Since its inception, clip art has evolved to include a wide variety of content, file formats, illustration styles, and licensing restrictions.

Clip art is generally composed exclusively of illustrations (created by hand or by computer software), and does not include stock photography.

The following is the simple three steps process which anyone can do for free at home

The following are three examples (of many) on where you can obtain the free clip art which the Royal Opera House Muscat logo and entire visual identity was based upon. just copy and paste it into your browser and see for yourself.

Please notice that the “Royal Opera House Muscat” logo clip art was uploaded on Vecteezy website on October 23rd, 2007 and since then it has been downloaded more than 257,031  times from this site alone.





The following example illustrates the original clip art with followed then with a progression to the current official logo of the Royal Opera House Muscat logo.

The lessons to be learned here are that:

  1. The logo is based entirely on clip art.
  2. You can not protect something that you don’t own or have Intellectual Property rights for.
  3. The wide number of downloads of the same vector clip art used for the logo means that it is most certainly used somewhere in the world for something other than the Royal Opera House Muscat
  4. Most important of all…do NOT ever use a clip art or an element of a clip art in ANY logo design, specially when it involves national pride.


NB. In case you were wondering…the logo of the Royal Opera House Muscat was designed by Landor in Dubai 😉 there was another incident  where Landor got inspired by the (new at that time) logo of Quark Xpress and used it for a chain of supermarkets in Dubai.

    Never noticed that, well spotted ;). It’s a bit shameful isn’t it? They probably paid Landor lots of money for that.

    Oh yeah, from what i heard they paid a very BIG amount of money to Landor for this cut and past clip art “effort”

    Can somebody tell me why foreign compagnies do our branding and indentity? Do they know us better then ourseleves? Maybe…
    Shame on us how we trust the others but not our local agencies.

    Having worked at Landor Dubai for a 3 month freelance stint a while back I can tell you that it was an absolute madhouse. I can assure you that it was not an effective place to create anything of worth. It does not look like that culture has changed.

    EK, the offices do work fairly independently and the Dubai office has been losing work to Landor Mumbai and Landor Sydney over the past few years because of the lack of creative and strategic leadership. Unfortunately, the quality of the permanent staff there – whether foreign or local, working as creatives or suits – were not up to scratch for an agency working on such large projects. Those that did talk sense were ignored as their solutions required more effort.

    Job satisfaction was related to money not the quality of the work done – welcome to Dubai!

    Thank you AP for sharing your thoughts and experience at Landor. I think at the core of the problem is the absence of corporate culture and passion combined with business ethics due to the fact that these “international” names are just a franchise of ONLY the name. look at links (on this blog) to other international names in the region who continue to do the same thing everyday and many of them seem to get away with it which is one of the reasons for building this blog.

    what a shame……

    And the bigger shame in the story is, that the responsible people in opera house they might know that this logo is not even deserve to call logo” its just a clip art”

    am not against using clip arts but not as a logos or part of a logo.

    I have addressed this issue to them personally more than three months ago and gave them upon their request the full presentation consisting of 56 slides so they ARE aware of it.

    I imagine the Sultan would be horrified to learn about this sad tale. Clip art is the opposite of Royal.

    I totally agree with Chris on this point. I think no one dares to reveal or share the truth about this logo crime to his majesty.

    The same clip art that is used for The Royal Opera House Muscat is used on toilet paper in hotel in Dubai. I will soon post the photo.
