Oman Advertising industry lose huge revenue

Wed, 27 June 2012

By Kabeer Yousuf -

MUSCAT — As a major chunk of leading companies in Oman are getting their advertisements, designing and even printing works out of the country, the Sultanate is losing several millions of rials to its neighbouring countries every year.
This revenue which is otherwise supposed to be circulating in the country’s economy is pumped out by companies as diverse as banking to telecommunication and from automotive to hospitality and chartered accountants firms.
It is said that while some firms are paying RO 25,000 every month against ‘creativity fees’, some major business houses which make use of Sultanate’s trade licence, related entity documentations and other relaxed facilities are pumping out nearly RO 4,000-5,000 each year to the glitz and glam of another country.
Whopping 80 per cent of the total expenditure on this is going out of the country and the players in the country are vying for the 20 per cent left behind.
“The reason is nothing but acute dearth of quality work to a great extent,” avers Louai Alasfahani, a wizard who took the glory of Arab design at the pinnacle of global attention when he was chosen a member of the grand jury at the New York Advertising Festival 2012, representing Oman for the first time.

Rumors confirmed, Safir Hotel Chit Chat logo is a 10 year old copycat

What a coincidence, same country (Kuwait), same industry (Restaurant), Similar name, same logo (you can clearly tell that it is traced from Rumors), one more thing, the Marketing Guru Mustafa Mansour who works for Safir Hotel (chit chat logo) used to work for Paragon and he is very familiar with the Rumors logo, so please do not even dare to mention conicedence or telepathy.

In the ideas business, how could the industry evolve if IP is not protected, how could a logo function as a tool for differentiation if anyone can copy and use it.

Hiii Brand removes shameless copy cat logo from their competition

In every design and creative competition, talentless individuals copy the work of others and try to scam their way into winning and depriving true creativity from shining, which is sad but what is worse is the fact that some award organizers even when they are alerted to such incidents do not do anything about it!!! this is not the case with Hiiibrand.  After i brought to the attention of Hiiibrand (with facts) that one of the entries into their international logo design competition is a shameless copy cat, they responded promptly by disqualifying and removing the copy cat logo from the competitions as well as addressing this matter to the culprit. Thank you Hiiibrand for your cooperation, swift action and integrity.

THE CHALLENGE:

The topic for this year’s challenge is SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. In its simplest context, Sustainable Development is growth that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of new generations to meet the needs of the future.

It is commonly understood as a process of learning how to make decisions that consider the long-term future of the economy, ecology and equity of all communities.  As US President Dwight D. Eisenhower said in 1959, “The world must learn to work together-or finally it will not work at all”.

The student challenge is to creatively communicate how Sustainable Development enables nature, life support and communities to be sustained with the ongoing development of people, economy and society.

Application forms and submission procedures are available onwww.iaaglobal.org/Education.  Or click here to download the Case Brief.

If you have any questions, please contact Nubia Martinez -nubia.martinez@iaaglobal.org.
